Vertical Gardening on Television

We have had a big year of vertical gardening on television that started with our Varden Vertical Gardens being installed as part of a new Netflix show called “Instant Dream Home”. Shot in the Atlanta area, Varden wall planters, planted with Sedum, were built onto the front of a home as part of the episode 2 renovation. Then we directly attached our Varden Trays and Varden Sleeves, all planted with edible garden plants, to the backyard entertainment pergola on another home renovation project featured in episode 6. That entire series aired in July ’22 and can still be streamed so check it out. The vertical gardens we built for all of the shows were top of the line Outdoor Varden 36 units with automated drip irrigation and pre-filled Vardensoks planted with our Fast Start Plants for success. In all of the vertical wall garden build-outs, we tiled the Varden 36  2’x 3′ units to create much larger vertical gardens easily. Build time was tight on all of the shows so we had to install fast! It was super fun and a vertical garden challenge like none other. The experience enables us to serve our customers small-space garden needs even better.

After Netflix, our Varden Vertical Gardens showed up in Charleston, SC on HGTV’s “Rock the Block Season 3 as we built an outdoor patio garden on the side of a garage. Our team created food and beauty (yard to table as the Twins say) as part of the home finishes for contestants Lyndsay and Leslie Lamb of HGTV’s “Unsellable Houses”. The Twins did not win the competition but all four of the homes were incredible and our Varden Vertical Garden, planted with leafy greens and herbs, was a big hit with the judges. All of the design teams were talented and fun to work with and we met the Marrs through our participation in Rock the Block as well. You can review some of our photo posting from earlier in the year on a previous blog at this link.

Vertical Gardening Basics

Vertical gardening includes any type of growing system that uses stacked layers or walls to grow plants upward instead of outward. There are several different approaches to vertical gardening, such as living walls, trellises, and hanging planters. Living walls can be created by mounting wooden or metal frames onto a wall and filling them with soil and plants. Trellises are structures made from wood or metal which can be used for supporting climbing vegetables or flowers; they’re usually attached directly to a wall or fence. Hanging planters are pots suspended from ceilings or rafters; these make great places for growing herbs or small flowering plants indoors or outdoors.

In addition to wall mounting, Our Varden systems can be mounted on posts, fences, garden stands, leaned against structures on balconies/patios or hung from cables. Small-space gardeners can utilize our products for vertical gardening in just about any place they have access! The Modern Garden is more urban and needs to fit the needs of space-challenged urban gardeners.

Advantages of Vertical Gardening

The main advantage of vertical gardens is that they maximize space efficiency; you can get more plants in less space than you would with traditional ground-level gardens. They’re also great for people who don’t have a lot of time on their hands because they require less maintenance than horizontal gardens. For example, weeds are much easier to control in vertical gardens since all the soil is contained within individual pockets rather than spread out over an entire plot of land. Additionally, many types of vertical gardens can be moved easily so you can enjoy freshly grown produce wherever you go!

In addition to being more efficient with space, vertical gardening also allows you to grow more unusual varieties such as vine crops (like cherry tomatoes) that wouldn’t normally fit into a traditional garden layout. Plus, the visual impact created by lush green walls or hanging baskets full of colorful flowers makes an impressive statement no matter where you choose to hang them!

Dave and Jenny Marrs have shown us just how amazing vertical gardens can look when done right—and now we know why this type of farming has become so popular in recent years! Whether you’re looking for ways to save space or just want something unique for your home renovation project, consider giving vertical gardening a shot! It’s an easy way to add some greenery (and color!) into your life while maximizing efficiency at the same time—what could be better?
